The forest. A retreat from the world into the secluded darkness of nature. A place where when it all became too much, it beckoned you into its green overhangs, the sounds of nature dimming all the sounds of the world. A place of quiet meditation. And that's what Damian loved about the forest. It was a place where he could go to escape the monotony of the school day, a place where he would be in his element, where he didn't have to fear anything. Although many of the teachers had recommended that they don't enter the forest, Damian ignored them. What could possibly harm him there? He was in his own element, it wasn't as if he meditated at the bottom of the ocean or in a volcano. It was a place where he would have the advantage over anything that tried to attack him, man or beast. So Damian took no heed to their warnings and went into the forest daily in order to practice his skill and meditate so that he could achieve a higher sense of being and to reflect on his past, learning from his mistakes. Damian sat there on the cold earth, sitting criss-crossed with his hands crossed as well. His eyes were closed, doing his best to block out anything around him. Most would of thought he was very vulnerable for an attack, but while meditating, Damian's sense of hearing was much higher. He would be able to hear footsteps or the swish of a tree branch if anything was disturbed. He had been dressed in green and black camouflage but it would have been hard to tell because green vines had wrapped themselves around his legs, anchoring him to the ground and a tree had shifted towards him, casting a shadow over where he sat, shielding him from wandering eyes. As Damian meditated, he focused on increasing his power, using his mind to make pebbles and stones orbit around him. He was in a perfect state of peace, undisturbed by anything.

Life just wasn't going his way, lately.
Seventeen year old Shawn Spencer sighed and wandered out of the building, shivering in the cold air, and then wincing slightly as the shudder caused one of his still-healing wounds to throb. He'd wanted to heal the injuries, but thanks to the fact that he'd been banged up pretty bad, they'd said he would be best waiting for them to heal on their own, rather than 'taking unnecessary risks'. He'd almost snorted at this point. It didn't seem so unnecessary when you were the one suffering the pain. And yet surprisingly enough, Shawn wasn't mad at Alexandre for almost killing him. After getting the full story between Alex and his younger brother, Shawn felt that he understood, at least to some degree. To lose a sibling, if even temporarily, must be a horrible experiance. Shawn didn't know what he would do without Jacklynn, his little sister was his life. Apparently Aiden had known nothing about Alex's dark side, which had surprised Shawn as everyone knew Alex had a bad reputation for his attitude, and had only just found out that day that Alexandre had been in jail for two years due to attempted murder. They'd gotten into a fight, Alex had gotten drunk, got into his car, and then he'd crashed straight into Shawn.
Light flakes were beginning to drift lazily down from the sky, and Shawn shook his head to dispell the fakes from his two-toned hair. He had never really liked the snow, it was much too cold and wet for him. But being an earth student, he liked fresh air, so he'd decided to take a walk in the wilderness. He wasn't afraid of nature, it was much safer than hanging around the Academy where a fire student like Conner could corner him.
Instead of taking the well-worn path into the tangled forest, he strayed off in a random direction, knowing his way around the forest from previous excursions. He strolled along at a leisurely pace, humming 'Cross My Heart' by Marianas Trench as he walked. He stopped suddenly and fell silent as he spotted another student, obviously earth because of the stones and vines around him. He looked familiar, and after a few seconds, Shawn realized this was the new earth leader. He smiled softly to himself and decided to say hello, because Shawn was a friendly kid. "Hey, your name is Damian, right?" he recalled.

Damian's eyes flew open, searching for the sound of a human voice that he had heard. It wasn't too difficult, since he seemed to be standing in his line of vision. Damian was kind of paranoid when people interrupted him during his meditation, since it wasn't often that people ventured into the forest and found him. He normally was able to stay hidden, relying on the forest to hide him from any intruders. But obviously, it had failed him this time, causing him to make som quick judgements. Seeing as how this stranger didn't try to sneak up on him, he probably wasn't someone who was coming to harm him. And by the looks of him, he didn't seem to be of the firebenders, the only people that Damian had ever had a problem with. Ever since the fire at his house, Damian had always loathed fire and fire elementals, believing that they possibly could have tried to break into his house that one fateful night. But, no, he didn't seem to be a threat so Damian didn't know try to arm himself. Although he wasn't much of a social person, Damian stopped the orbit of the pebbles, letting them fall to the ground with a clatter. The vines shrunk back into the ground, releasing Damian from his anchor to the ground, standing up as he was released. "Yes, Damian Black." Damian said, confirming his identity. He walked towards the stranger, extending his hand for a handshake. As Damian neared, he could tell the face was kind of familiar, probably somebody that he had seen around the Earth Dorms, meaning he was an earthbender. Ever since he had bee "And you are?" Damian asked, trying to learn as many names as he could. Since he had just been awarded the position of Earth Leader, he would need to learn the names of the earthbenders.

Shawn shook Damian's hand without hesitation, because although he was usually shy in such situations, the earth leader couldn't be a bad person. After all, to claim the title of leader, you had to have the basic qualities of your element. For earth it was considered indepence and loyalty to your friends, and a desire in general to be let alone by the other elements, especially fire. The thunder elementals were usually quick to attack as well, but they went for water rather than earth, seeing as it would be too easy for an earth student to disarm them.
"Shawn Spencer," he said in his quiet yet friendly tone. He wondered if Damian had yet met his female counterpart, Migoto. Shawn had seen her around a few times, and had quickly managed to categorize her as an energetic and bubbly person, as well as very easy to get along with. Shawn felt most at ease around people of his own element, because they were the only group where everyone he met to date was friendly toward him, not one rude comment yet. Thunder and fire were constantly pestering him, and even a few wind and water students had overstepped the line from indifference to ignorance.
"Do you spend a lot of time here?" he asked curiously. He wasn't trying to pry, he was just intrigued by the meditation session he'd walked in on. "I haven't seen you here before, and that's surprising, as I come a lot. Though not usually in the middle of winter, as I don't like the cold."

"Shawn Spencer, pleasure to meet you." Damian said politely as he released his hand, placing his own hands inside his jacket pockets. Damian was glad that he finally got the chance to meet someone is his own element, he had mostly only been able to distinguish people by their face. And it lead to small conflict within the earth student's. Some had protested Damian's rise to Earth Leader, believing that the new student shouldn't be allowed to take the empty position so quickly. They believed that someone who had been at the school should have taken the position, but instead Damian had been chosen. Damian figured it had been because of his strength and knowledge of his element. But the world would probably never know, which was okay because eventually those who protested stopped talking about it and focused on other things, like stopping the firebenders.
"Yes, I often visit the forest later in the day. Usually after lessons." Damian explained. The forest had always been a refuge for him, especially after his battle training classes. The forest was his home away from home, where no one could reach him. Well, that wasn't entirely true, considering what was happening, but why should he be surprised that an Earthbender had been able to find him. "Yeah, the cold is the only drawback of visiting the forest during the winter. But its worth it sometimes to get away from the world. You know?" Damian wasn't surprised when Shawn said that he walked in the forest as well. It was a favorite past time of many of the earthbenders, since the forest was their element, where little harm could come to them. The only problem he had ever run into was when firebenders decided they wanted to see how fast leaves can burn. Firebenders, such destructive people. And Damian usually had to confront them about it, and it wasn't always peaceful. Which was a shame, because Damian had never enjoyed pointless fighting...

"And you, also," Shawn agreed with a nod. Wow, he thought to himself, smiling. He's so kind and polite, no wonder they chose him as leader! They'd offered Shawn a position in the initial election type thing that was held at the end of every year, but he'd denied the request. He had been dealing with enough stress then without having to worry about possibly being in command of a large group of students when the year rolled around. But of all the candidiates, Shawn had to silently agree that Damian would be the best for the job. He'd seen the younger boy confront the fire students when they decided to try and destroy the forest, something Shawn would have never been able to do. He hated to call himself a coward, but he was quite timid when it came to facing a group of students that had power over his element, not to mention chose picking on him as a favourite past-time.
Shawn nodded, jamming his hands in the pockets of his black jeans, because they were starting to be affected by the cold. He regretted going against the decision to wear a warmer jacket, because the light one he wore provided little protection against the cold bite of the winter wind. "I also like to come here after classes," he said in his soft voice. "I sometimes study in this forest as well, because I find the library too dull and lifeless to conduct proper studying. Plus, the fire students have taken to hiding behind the bookshelves and throwing stuff, so I try to avoid going in there as much as I can. Except when it's snowing out, because if there's one thing I hate more than the cold itself, it's the snow. It might be pretty to look at, but it sure isn't very pleasant when it soaks through your clothes and leaves you shivering all day. But I agree, it is a nice place to get away from things. So peaceful and quiet." As he spoke, his eyes wandered to the branches of the trees around them, some stubborn dead leaves still clinging to the twigs. The sight amused him, and a light smile graced his features again. "I wish the fire students could just leave nature alone," he sighed.

Damian nodded his head in agreement, understanding Shawn's dilemma with the fire students. Damian had always considered them to be an unruly bunch of kids, setting fire to everything in their path and leaving a wake of destruction behind them. Thinking of them was enough to make Damian become angry, but he was able to keep his anger from showing on his face. Sure, there had been a couple of the fire students who were actually polite and acted properly, but most of them were immature and did not care for any of the other elements except for thunder. Damian had always found it strange how thunder was the only one that the fire students were really able to get along with, other than their own. Earth students were nothing like that, since they were considered the nicest out of the five groups. Which really wasn't a surprise, considering some of the people in that class. Take Shawn here for instance.
"Ah, I understand what you mean. The library has never been somewhere that I could study. I find the sounds of nature more comforting than the silence of a building." Damian stated in agreement. Even though he had always had his problems with the fire students, it had never been anything that he couldn't solve on his own. "The snow does become bothersome, but I guess I've become use to it since I'm out here so often." Damian said. It had also helped that his father had trained him in all elements so that he wouldn't be surprised in any situation. They only element he ever really had a problem with was wind, since he was easily blown off his feet or his attacks were misdirected. "I know! I wish they would leave nature alone as well. But it is in their nature to be so destructive...what a shame. But there are ways to deal with them." Although Damian had never really been a fighter, he didn't mind confronting the fire students when it came to destroying his refuge. If Damian heard them enter the forest, he would try to put up as many defenses as he could before actually fighting them. Traps, pitfalls, and many other things were usually what Damian set, trying to take out as many as he could if they came in groups. And if it still came to hand combat, Damian would fight as dirty as possible. He had never really been a believe in fair fighting and he would use all sorts of tactics against them. This made some of the fire students fear him, but mostly hate him even more. And now with the position of Earth Leader, they knew that he must be a skilled earthbender, so they would do their best to stay clear of him. Just as Damian tried to do with them. It was the only way they could live in peace, avoiding each other.
